After the longest winter in more than 30 years, what could be more delightful than row upon row of golden daffodils.

But while this picture may be an uplifting sign of spring for most of us, for daffodil growers it signifies a major problem.

Shops and supermarkets don't want to buy stems that have already bloomed, and so soon this glorious scene will turn brown as most of the crop is left to rot in the field.

The glut of blooms is being blamed on the long winter.

It delayed the start of the daffodil season by a month, and when the weather did finally warm up, the flowers bloomed too quickly.

Barcelona hit with heaviest snowfall in 25 years

Snowfalls of up to 50 centimetres (20 inches) were forecast for the worst affected areas of the region of Catalonia, prompting the regional government to cancel classes for more than 142,000 students at 476 public schools.

Power was lost in homes throughout the region, with energy company Fecsa-Endesa reporting 200,000 clients without electricity, mostly in the province of Girona.

Emergency services workers helped evacuate some 500 passengers who became trapped on trains traveling between Barcelona and Portbou, on the French border, which became stuck due to the lack of power, said regional interior minister Joan Boada.

Thousands of commuters were left scrambling for an alternative way to get home after the blizzard forced the suspension of bus services in Barcelona and the closure of five suburban train lines in the Mediterranean port city.

Barcelona city hall ordered the metro system to stay open all night to help people move around the city.

Traffic on over 60 roads in Catalonia was either prohibited or restricted. Spain's border with France at La Jonquera was closed because of the snow, leaving some 4,000 trucks stranded, public television TVE reported.

While Barcelona's El Prat airport was operating normally, 21 flights out of the airport in nearby Girona were cancelled and nine others were diverted to other cities due to the snow and strong winds, airport officials said.

As each flake falls, global warming's hold on the public diminishes

As Washington digs itself out from under the Snowpocalypse, the region braces for yet more flurries. At least 18 inches of snow lie on the ground at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and some places were blanketed under as much as three feet. More arctic blasts this week could drive 2010 into the history books as the capital's snowiest winter ever.

The news must send chills up the spines of global warming adherents, for whom this winter has been marked by discontent. Several of the movement's high priests have been exposed as charlatans. The famed "hockey stick" chart - cited as indisputable evidence that the planet has been warming for a century owing to carbon emissions - was exposed for fraudulently doctoring data to "hide the decline" in global temperatures. When the the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that glaciers were melting as a result of the selfishness of mankind, the claim turned out to be a complete fabrication.

The left now must dig itself out from under more than just snow. Public acceptance of a massive cap-and-trade scheme to control carbon emissions diminishes as neighborhood snowdrifts climb ever skyward.

Washington DC ground to a halt on Saturday as the US capital was blanketed in its heaviest snowfall in nearly a century by a storm dubbed “snowmageddon” and “snowpocalypse”.

The “white-out” blizzard dumped up to 32 inches of snow in some parts of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia were all pounded, receiving up to 2.5 feet (30 inches). After setting several records, the storm swept out to sea across New Jersey and Virginia, battering the mid-Atlantic shore with winds gusting to 40 miles an hour but largely skirting New York.

The snow brought down electricity lines, leaving at least 200,000 people without power. Several roofs collapsed and trees were felled, blocking roads. The weather has already been blamed for hundreds of accidents and the deaths of a father and son who were trying to help a crashed motorist in Virginia.
