Emergency workers in the US state of Indiana are rushing to rescue motorists trapped in cars after a storm brought heavy snow to much of the Midwest.

High winds and snow were complicating rescue efforts, officials said. Four people were reported killed in weather-related accidents across the country.

The roof of the Metrodome stadium in Minneapolis collapsed on Sunday after a snowfall of 17 inches (43cm).

Meanwhile, officials warned of bitter cold temperatures across the US.

In Indiana, LaPorte County sheriff's deputy Andy Hynek told the Associated Press news agency that some motorists had been stranded as long as 12 hours on a 10-mile stretch of road.

"All the way across US 30 is at a standstill and all of those vehicles are occupied," he said.

Scotland's transport minister will make an emergency statement to parliament later on the snow chaos which brought gridlock to major roads on Monday.

Opposition MSPs have criticised Stewart Stevenson's response to the severe weather. Efforts are still continuing to reopen a 20-mile section of the M8.

Transport Scotland advised drivers in the central belt to make only "essential journeys".

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of pupils are having yet another day off school.

All schools in Glasgow, Inverclyde, East Dunbartonshire, West Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire will be shut.

Drivers across the UK are being warned to take extra care as the working week begins amid further heavy snow and ice.

Parts of eastern England and Scotland already under thick snow could get up to 25cm (10in) more by Monday morning.

Plummeting temperatures overnight will lead to icy roads in many places, while strengthening winds will cause snow to drift and make it feel even colder.

Motoring organisation the AA is warning commuters to take great care, even on major roads that have been gritted.

The UK has been experiencing the earliest widespread snowfall since 1993.
