Snow in Brazil, below zero Celsius in the River Plate and tropical fish frozen

For a second day running it snowed Wednesday in Southern Brazil and in twelve of Argentina’s 24 provinces including parts of Buenos Aires as a consequence of the polar front covering most of the continent’s southern cone with zero and below zero temperatures.

Light snow storms in Brazil were concentrated in areas of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. O Globo network aired snow flakes falling in early morning, cars covered with a thin white coating and some roads dangerously slippery because of ice.

In Argentina the phenomenon extended to Northern provinces, geographically sub-tropical while in the Patagonia and along the Andes snow reached over a metre deep, isolating villages and causing yet undisclosed losses to crops and livestock.

The extreme cold weather is expected to peak Thursday dawn with below zero temperatures and even lower with the wind chill factor.

After a harsh weekend, Argentina’s National Weather Forecast Service announced the cold weather is expected to stay until Thursday although it could again reach a freezing peak over the coming week-end.

Summer chill: July one of coolest on record by Pat Brennan

If you think July was strangely cool in Orange County, you're right: a new analysis by the National Weather Service shows that last month was one of the coolest on record in coastal Southern California.

Highs for July ran about five degrees below normal for most of the month in Orange County, the work of stubborn low-pressure air along the coast -- with a possible El Niño-La Niña connection.

"That's pretty significant," said Weather Service meteorologist Dan Atkin. "Basically we're saying a very persistent, upper-level trough of low pressure on the coast kept temperatures below normal, and kept things cool west of the mountains."

Beaches were especially cool -- "way below normal," Atkin said -- with plenty of cloud cover to keep things gloomy.

Despite a brief interruption by a string of hot days July 15 to 18, the month saw many records tied or broken for lowest maximum temperature: 21 days in all for coastal Southern California as a whole.

Supposedly Mark Twain once asserted: “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.” This July was cold, and Twain’s quote? Well, read on.

My friend Jan Null, former lead forecaster for the NWS in California, is now runs a private forecasting and forensic weather services business. He sends out regular emails with note of interest. Here is one of them:

With an average monthly maximum July temperature of just 63.1 degrees, San Francisco had its coolest July since 1971 and the 13th coolest in the past 97 years. Only one day reached the 70 degree mark (72 degrees on 7/3 and no day after the 17th exceeded 64 degrees.

Recent reports claim June was the warmest on record, but it seems to fly in the face of reports of record cold from around the world.

Reports from Australia say, “Sydney recorded its coldest June morning today since 1949, with temperatures diving to 4.3 degrees just before 6:00 a.m. (AEST).” “Experts say it is unusual to see such widespread cold weather in June

In the southern hemisphere reports of cold have appeared frequently but rarely make the mainstream media.

“The Peruvian government has declared a state of emergency in more than half the country due to cold weather.”

“This week Peru’s capital, Lima, recorded its lowest temperatures in 46 years at 8C, and the emergency measures apply to several of its outlying districts.”
