The government has temporarily relaxed the legal restrictions on the length of time lorry drivers can work to help ease the backlog caused by snow.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said allowing hauliers to drive for an extra hour a day for the next four days would help deliveries of "vital supplies".

Royal Mail reported problems with about 10% of deliveries on Friday, and pumps at hundreds of garages could run dry.

Forecasters are warning freezing conditions could continue next week.

The first flakes of snow fell on London on Tuesday morning as the blizzards that have gripped most of the country showed signs of spreading to the South East.

Londoners woke up to a thin dusting of snow amid reports that the “big freeze” could reach every part of Britain.

Forecasters predicted that up to three inches (8cm) could fall on higher ground in London and the South East during the day as the heavy snow spreads south.

Blizzards that have blighted Scotland and the North East in recent days brought up to two inches to the Midlands overnight and could reach the capital, as well as parts of Wales and the South East.

The heaviest snow storms for decades have struck the eastern US, paralysing air and road transport, and bringing Washington DC to a standstill.

The storm knocked down power lines and left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity.

Nearly 2ft (60cm) of snow had fallen by noon on Saturday in cities across the region, the Associated Press reports.

The governors of Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland have declared states of emergency.

West Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey are also affected.
