As the UK’s worst winter in 30 years continues, weathermen and motoring organisations predicted further hazardous conditions on the roads and chaos for youngsters trying to get to and from schools.

The latest in a string of cold snaps is due to hit the country early next week and could last as long as 10 days. Motoring groups last night called on local authorities to be better prepared this time and stockpiles of salt were being readied in a bid to get more roads treated than in the wintry spell before and after Christmas.

Weathermen warned that snowfall could be heavy in places, leaving thousands of schools once again forced to decide whether or not to close their doors. Independent risk meteorologists British Weather Services said the blast of cold air would hit the UK early next week, leading to a protracted period of icy chaos.
