Wintry weather is set to continue into half term next week with little sign of a respite in the chilly spell which has enveloped Britain

Meteorologists predicted that more snow, sleet, rain and freezing fog are on the way.

"It is likely to be unsettled again after the weekend," a spokesman said. "It could be absolutely anywhere, although snow is more likely on higher ground".

Today saw more heavy snow and ice, especially in East Sussex and Kent with more than five inches falling in some areas.

Main roads in both counties, including the A259 which links Eastbourne with Bexhill-on-Sea were particularly treacherous. The AA was bracing itself to handle 14,000 breakdowns, compared to 9,000 on a normal Thursday.
