A council less than 50 miles from Britain's biggest salt mine is importing thousands of tonnes more than 6,000 miles from Peru to replenish stocks lost to the big freeze.

Rochdale Council took the drastic action after transport bosses became concerned that grit levels could fall critically low for a second year running.

Although much of the UK will enjoy a much welcome spell of milder weather this week, forecasters last night warned that winter is not yet over.

Residents in the north east of England yesterday woke up to a fresh sprinkling of snow and the Met Office refused to rule out a return of the freezing temperatures which crippled much of the UK last month.
