New York gets December average of snow in a day

The roar of traffic was dulled, the constant hum of voices dimmed, the bustling city smothered and stilled beneath a virtual avalanche of pristine, white snow.

New York's Times Square yesterday looked almost as it did in the 2001 film Vanilla Sky, when a terrified Tom Cruise discovered himself eerily alone in an intersection that is normally one of the busiest in the world.

The only difference yesterday was the snow itself and the occasional skier (well, and the lack of Tom Cruise).

Yesterday's extraordinary blizzard dumped up to 25 inches of snow in some areas as it stormed up the East Coast.

It wreaked havoc on travellers returning from the Christmas period from the Carolinas to Maine, leaving many stranded by the freezing conditions.

States of emergency were declared in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Maine and Massachusetts.
