The mercury is due to rise steadily this week with temperatures reaching double figures in some parts of the country.

However, the warmer weather – which could see the west of England bask in temperatures up to 52F (11C) – could bring chaos as thawing ice and snow causes floods.

Flood alerts were yesterday put in place for south west England, while much of the country was deemed to be at increased risk.

But forecasters do not expect the warmer spell to last long, as a renewed arctic blast plunges Britain back into sub-zero conditions down to 28F (-2C) on Thursday.

New Year’s Eve revellers will also shiver in temperatures below freezing, the Met Office said.
