Scotland has called in the Army to clear a fresh wave of ice and snow that has crippled the country’s transport network.

Edinburgh City Council is in discussions with the Army at Redford Barracks about drafting in troops to clear residential streets after 30 inches of snow fell in parts of the capital.

The deluge – which appeared to take the authorities by surprise – saw people forced to sleep in their cars overnight or abandon them on the highways as motorways and A-roads were left impassable.

The recent snowfall is the heaviest the city has seen for about 50 years, and temperatures are expected to stay resolutely below freezing throughout Scotland until Thursday - leaving thick sheets of ice and compacted snow on roads and pavements.
