The West will be hit by the first icy blast of winter next week, according to forecasters.

Over the weekend, temperatures are predicted to start dropping, heralding a week where wrapping up warm will be the order of the day.

The region is not predicted to get the wintry showers that might hit some parts of the UK, such as the East coast, but things are going to get chilly.

A Met office spokesman said temperatures may struggle to get above 5ºC (41ºF) during the day, and frost and ice could be regular features overnight.

However, they are not, as yet, predicting the sort of winter that caused council grit stocks to run low last time round.

The spokesman said: "Britain will see snow in the next few days, but this will be limited primarily to areas of higher ground and in the North or North-East of the country.
